Photo Hunt: Rock(s)
July 18, 2009On our last day to Batanes, we visited the eastern part of Basco. There are many beautiful places and sceneries that can be visited on the other side and we saw these:
This is a church made of stones located at the top of the hill. It’s just sad that the church is not open and we were not able to see the interior of it.

The picture below is what they call as the Valugan Beach. The whole beach are covered with boulders of rocks. According to the locals there:
Valugan Beach manifests the volcanic effusions from Mt. Arayat that is an important geologic formation in the archipelago. The geomorphic resource provided by the valugan beach provides rich information in the land formation of Batanes.
The beach consists of smooth boulders of different sizes. Found along the beach at the eastern foot of Mt. Iraya. They are andesites stones and cover the shoreline. These stones are hosts to several shellfish and mollusks that provide food and nutrition to the Ivatans specially those from Basco. The stones provide a natural shore protection for the eastern side of Basco and they contribute substantially to the enhancement of the aesthetic value to the seascape and landscape of Batan Island.
